Nature's Way Standardized Black Cohosh |
|
![]() |
Black cohosh, whose botanical name is Actaea racemosa, and is otherwise known as bugbane, fairy candle or black snakeroot, is a plant that grows mostly in North American forests. The roots are used medicinally, eaten either fresh or frozen, or made into tablets, teas or liquid extract. Hailed for its soothing properties, black cohosh has been used by Native Americans for centuries as a remedy for all kinds of ailments, from sore throats to depression. They would even rub the juice on snake bites or wounds to encourage faster healing. In the 19th century, black cohosh was used to induce menstruation, prevent miscarriages and cure infertility, but pregnant women today are advised not to take black cohosh because the exact effects on the fetus have not been determined. Today, black cohosh is most commonly used to calm a number of menstrual symptoms, such as painful or delayed menstruation. It has analgesic properties, which make it useful in calming PMS symptoms like backaches and abdominal cramping. It's also helpful as a menopause supplement. Black cohosh may prevent hot flashes, vaginal dryness and anxiety. Many women prefer it to prescription hormone replacement therapy. Ingredients: Gelatin (capsule), millet, magnesium stearate. Directions: Take one capsule three times daily, preferably with food. Cautions: Not recommended for use by pregnant or lactating women. Return to: Nature's Way product page |
